Beyond Rangoon

In retrospect I don’t think this should have been on the list. I thought it was about the Aung San Suu Kyi’s movement against the oppressive Burmese (Myanmar) government. Instead, it was about a depressed American tourist who recklessly goes into the jungle and gets chased by the army. She does briefly see Aung San Suu Kyi though, and connects with other anti-government activists.

It was based on a true story and apparently the film itself was important because it showed the brutal repression of the Burmese military against the people. After it’s release, the army temporarily released Aung San Suu Kyi.

However, the acting and poor decisions of the main character were fun to mock and so it made for a more lighthearted radical movie night than most 🙂
